International Women’s Day 2026: why diversity is a necessity, not an option

This International Women's Day, we're examining why diversity in tech and AI isn't optional—it's essential. Despite progress, women are still underrepresented in technical roles. For the past 9 years, Le Wagon Canada has worked to change the numbers.

On this International Women’s Day, we wanted to share a message that resonates particularly strongly today.

A few months ago, at the MTL Tech Awards organized as part of MTL Connecte, Le Wagon Canada’s cofounder and general manager, Marie-Gabrielle Ayoub, spoke in the Women in Tech category. Her speech, although delivered several months ago, has lost none of its relevance. On the contrary, as AI accelerates the transformation of our jobs and the lack of diversity persists in the tech sector, her words echo the urgency to act.

How the tech and AI revolution is transforming jobs

Marie-Gabrielle opened her pitch with a dizzying observation: tech and AI will transform 9 out of 10 jobs by 2032. Beyond our tools, this revolution questions our bearings, our professions, sometimes even our professional future.

Faced with this upheaval, two choices are available to us: panic and “retreat to a cabin deep in the woods”, or roll up our sleeves and seize this challenge as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves.

Le Wagon Canada: 9 years making tech accessible

For 9 years, Le Wagon Canada’s mission has been clear: make tech skills accessible to everyone. We have trained more than 1,000 people — aged 18 to 65, from all backgrounds. Musicians, chefs, welders, engineers, nurses, marketers, graphic designers… All chose to give new momentum to their careers and take control of their professional future.

Beyond our bootcamp offerings (in AI Software Development, Data Analytics and Data Science & AI), we actively contribute to stimulating Montreal’s tech ecosystem: nearly 690 free events organized, and a network of more than 100 partners by our side.

The underrepresentation of women in tech

In 2016, Marie-Gabrielle became aware of a troubling figure: women represented only 20% of the technological workforce in Canada.

Why, in such a promising and open sector, are women still so few?

For her, the key lay in training: learning differently, breaking codes and regaining confidence in one’s abilities. This became a priority for Le Wagon Canada.

Building a more inclusive tech industry

Today, 40% of our graduates are women or non-binary people. To achieve this, we have invested more than $250,000 in scholarships*, developed committed partnerships, and highlighted numerous portraits of women role models.

Our campus has welcomed more than 60 nationalities — making Le Wagon a diverse, dynamic and inclusive community.

But the road is still long. Women represent 28% of the tech workforce today, and only 21% of technical roles. In the age of AI, this is a real societal issue.

Because diversity in tech is not an option

As Marie-Gabrielle reminded us: more than ever, we need diversity in tech. To design the right algorithms, imagine the right tools, and build solutions that reflect our society.

Tech is a tremendous lever for inclusion. It offers everyone the power to choose their life, regardless of their background or professional origin.

This is what we will continue to do at Le Wagon: ignite that flame, transmit concrete skills, and enable everyone to emancipate themselves in their new career.

Because diversity is not an option — it’s a necessity to develop more just and more human technology.

*This year again, Le Wagon Canada is investing $200,000 in the Tech & AI Literacy Fund, offering up to 50% off tuition fees. The goal: support more than 100 learners from underrepresented or underserved backgrounds (Terms and conditions apply).
