On Saturday 2nd of February 2019, Le Wagon Berlin hosted its first full-day Women’s Coding Workshop of the year! The workshop was held at Wonder Co-Working, a co-working space only for women in vibrant Prenzlauer Berg. Here is a quick recap of why and how our Women’s Coding Workshop was organised.
Summary
Since 2013, Le Wagon has taught 4000+ creative and entrepreneurial how to code around the world. In Berlin, we’re currently on our 9th bootcamp and counting.

We nurture a highly diverse global community of past and present students and have more than 200 teachers. As part of this cultural diversity, we feel very strongly about promoting gender parity at every opportunity.

It is not a myth that women as demographic are still underrepresented in the tech industry. Unfortunately, even today women hold less than 25% of the jobs in this field.

We believe that a more diverse environment is a more creative and effective one. A wide range of point of views and personal experiences shared in a team, puts any person in a better position to find new and creative solutions. We ourselves have witnessed this first-handed: more than 40% of our teaching staff and other colleagues are women, many of whom are our graduates themselves.

The main aim of these events is to empower women by giving them the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in teach and also provide the support the needed.

Female underrepresentation in this industry is a complex topic which requires more than just one solution. We believe that the first step is to cultivate a supportive network of female developers, teachers and entrepreneurs who are familiar with the unique issues faced by women in the tech industry.

The Women’s Coding Day Workshop is a full-day event dedicated to women who want to a) learn the basics of coding, b) find out if a coding bootcamp is the appropriate method for them to learn to code or c) meet like-minded and inspiring women.

With a maximum capacity of 30 participants and a spiked interest in the workshop of more than 600 Facebook event responses, over 200 applications and over 70 meetup responses - it goes to show that there is a need and interest for women wanting to find out more about coding.
