Using AI in Your Job Search: Expert Insights

Leading experts in recruitment and coaching offer invaluable advice on utilizing AI to enhance your job search.
Summary

In a recent workshop hosted by Le Wagon in Montreal, we gathered insights from experts from Rhum – Human Resources, Pierre-Luc Labbée, Founder and CEO, and a Certified professional coach and Jennifer McPherson, Talent partner and Certified life coach. They shared their valuable insights on leveraging AI to boost job searches. Here’s a recap of their practical advice and key takeaways on integrating AI effectively into your job search strategy.

How do you view AI’s role in the job search process?

Pierre-Luc: “AI should definitely be seen as a tool rather than a one-stop solution. It’s great for streamlining tasks like resume optimization and interview prep, but the human touch—personalization, creativity, and critical thinking—cannot be replaced. AI assists, but the personal element is irreplaceable.”

Could you expand on how AI can be used effectively in different stages of the job search?

Jennifer : “Absolutely. AI shines in several areas, for example:

  • Researching potential employers: AI tools can filter job postings and company info, helping you find opportunities that match your skills and interests.
  • Resume and cover letter writing: While AI can generate tailored content, it’s crucial to personalize and fact-check to avoid generic outputs.
  • Interview preparation: tools like ChatGPT can simulate questions, and platforms like Speechcoach.io and Jobma offer feedback on speech patterns, which can be especially helpful for neurodivergent individuals for example..”

Pierre-Luc: “AI can also help draft and refine your elevator pitch. I recommend preparing pitches of different lengths—three seconds, 33 seconds, and 333 seconds—to be ready for any situation.

For resume optimization, AI can help identify keywords and tailor your resume for applicant tracking systems (ATS). But always adapt each resume to the specific job, highlighting relevant skills and experiences.”

What are AI’s limitations in job applications?

Pierre-Luc: “One major point is that AI should not be over-relied upon. AI-generated content can be useful, but it often lacks the nuanced understanding needed for effective communication. Recruiters are skilled at spotting AI-generated text, so it’s important to use AI as a starting point and add your personal touch.”

Jennifer: “Personalization is crucial. While AI can assist in drafting documents, they must be tailored to the specific company and role. Highlight your unique experiences and align your application with the company’s values and mission.”

What are your thoughts on the current job market and how job seekers should navigate it?

Pierre-Luc: “The market is slow right now, but there’s hope as new technologies and industries emerge. Job seekers should stay proactive, continue learning, and be patient during their search.”

To wrap up, what’s your last words about using AI in job searches?

Jennifer: “AI is a powerful tool that can enhance your job search, but again, it’s important to balance its efficiency with a personal touch. Combining AI’s capabilities with your own creativity and insights will improve your chances of landing the job you want.”
