Recently at Le Wagon Montréal, we hosted Stéphane Burwash, Customer Solutions Architect at Infostrux, for a talk about his career journey and the path into solutions architecture. It was a chance to learn more about this role, what it looks like day to day, how to get there, and the mindset it requires. Along with his work as a Solutions architect, Stéphane also teaches data analytics at Le Wagon Montreal (Canada).

Learning how to learn

He describes his career as one driven by curiosity and persistence. Early on, he stepped into a role with few resources and almost no mentors. Instead of waiting for guidance, he bought books, joined online communities, and asked what he calls “really dumb questions” until he could piece things together. Looking back, he says the most valuable skill he built was simple but powerful: learning how to learn.

That mindset, treating every challenge as a learning opportunity, eventually led him into solutions architecture. The role, as he explains it, is not only about building systems. It is about translation: turning business needs into technical realities and ensuring solutions are scalable, sustainable, and human-centered.

The importance of communication

As a customer solutions architect, Stéphane works at the intersection of sales and delivery, making sure clients feel understood from the first conversation through to implementation. It is a balance of technical expertise, communication, and empathy, a role he half-jokingly calls part “data therapist.”

“A big skill I recommend all engineers to have is communication. Translation between technical and non-technical worlds is what makes you effective.”

Skills that matter beyond code

What stands out in his story is a commitment to continuous learning. Certifications, community meetups, writing, and teaching all play a part in keeping him sharp. His perspective is a reminder that careers in tech are less like ladders and more like webs, built from diverse experiences that strengthen both technical and human skills.

“You don’t learn just in a bootcamp. You don’t learn just in university. You learn every day and in different ways.”

This is the same mindset encouraged at Le Wagon, where learning is not only about gaining technical skills but also about developing adaptability and curiosity to apply them in new contexts. Many alumni begin as developers, analysts, or designers and grow into hybrid roles such as solutions architecture, project management, or product strategy. By focusing on hands-on learning and exposing students to a wide range of career paths, Le Wagon helps create the foundation for journeys like Stéphane’s.

For anyone exploring their own path, the takeaway is clear: expertise is not static, and you do not need to know everything at the start. What matters most is staying curious, asking questions, and being willing to grow.
