Antonin: A product leader goes data-driven

With two decades in product strategy and design, Antonin joined Le Wagon's Data Analytics bootcamp not to change careers, but to add a data layer to his expertise — and is now consulting on a Gen AI and Machine Learning programme in one of the biggest automobile manufacturer.

Twenty years in product

Antonin Lorain has spent 20 years in product. Design, strategy, UX, he’s done it all. But five years ago, he realised something was missing from his toolkit: data.

“I was making decisions based on gut feeling,” Antonin admits. “I wanted to add a rational, data-backed dimension to my work.”

At 41, he enrolled in Le Wagon’s Data Analytics bootcamp. Not to become a data scientist, but to speak their language. To understand how data teams think, what tools they use, where the insights come from.

“I’m data-informed, not data-centric,” Antonin clarifies. “Data tells part of the truth, but not all of it. You need to balance it with other insights.”

Data-informed, not data-centric

The Data Analytics bootcamp ran nine weeks, packed with case studies from professionals working in the field. Real data, real problems, no academic fluff.

Le Wagon brings in working practitioners to share case studies, not just academic exercises. Antonin appreciated learning from people who actually used these tools in production environments, not just textbook scenarios.

“The learning-by-doing approach was perfect,” Antonin says. “We worked with actual datasets, which gave everything credibility.”

He followed up with a second bootcamp, this one focused specifically on product analytics. Another nine weeks, another deep dive into tools like Mixpanel, Amplitude, and Looker.

Working with Renault Digital

Today, Antonin consults for Renault Digital, working on AI and machine learning projects. The data skills he built at Le Wagon show up in every conversation.

“I can talk to data analysts and data scientists as peers,” he explains. “We’re aligned on the glossary, the methodology, the approach.”

He still uses SQL constantly, querying databases, joining tables, building the foundation for analysis. From there, he moves into visualisation tools to monitor usage and adoption.

Better arguments, better decisions

“Data helps me make better arguments,” Antonin reflects. “Some stakeholders respond to storytelling, others need numbers. I can do both now.”

The case study projects were his favourite part of the bootcamp. Real problems, tight timelines, professional guidance. It felt like actual work, not school.

“It was challenging to do it while holding down a job,” Antonin admits. “But the pace was energising. I learned more in nine weeks than I thought possible.”

Le Wagon offers flexible scheduling options, including part-time tracks for people who can’t quit their jobs. Antonin appreciated being able to keep working while building new skills, even if it meant long days.

A winding career path

His career has zigged and zagged: agency CEO, consultant, employee, consultant again. The data skills opened new doors, letting him take on missions involving AI and machine learning.

“I can position myself on projects I couldn’t have touched before,” he says. “It’s expanded my scope.”

Antonin sees data as complementary to design, not in opposition to it. He’s always straddled two worlds: the creative and the analytical. The Data Analytics bootcamp let him strengthen the rational side without losing the intuitive one.

“The truth sits between both approaches,” he reflects. “Good strategy requires both.”
