Gwladys, a graduate of the John Molson School of Business (Concordia University), transitioned into web development after completing the Le Wagon bootcamp in 2022. Having moved from developer to team lead, she is now a Product Owner Consultant. Her journey highlights the importance of combining strategic expertise with technical skills.
What made you want to shift from product management to web development?
My experience in product management gave me a strategic view of web projects, but I quickly felt the need to take action and be directly involved in the creation of these products. Web development offered me the opportunity to go from theory to practice, bring my ideas to life, and collaborate more effectively with technical teams. The desire to move from a strategic vision to a more hands-on role in creating digital products was the driving force behind my career change.
Why did you choose Le Wagon for your training?
I chose Le Wagon after extensive research and comparison with several web development bootcamps. What attracted me the most was the comprehensive structure of the curriculum, covering a wide range of essential topics for a developer, from basic coding to more advanced concepts.
The final project offered by Le Wagon was also a major benefit, as it allowed me to start building a portfolio, which is crucial for post-Wagon job searches.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with alumni in the past who shared their positive experiences and showed me how the lessons were applied in the real world, which was key in my decision.
What were the biggest challenges you faced during the bootcamp and how did you overcome them?
The pace was quite high as we covered many topics in depth in a relatively short period. Each module was important and fundamental, so I had to stay focused and push through every day! My main challenge was making sure I understood the subjects and concepts deeply, rather than just copying and completing exercises without fully grasping the reasoning.
Nothing is insurmountable with motivation and a bit of discipline!
How would you describe the learning environment and the support you received during the bootcamp?
It was excellent! The learning environment at Le Wagon was both stimulating and supportive. The team projects promoted collaboration and created a very positive group dynamic. The instructors were always available to answer questions and guide us in our learning. The environment was adaptable to all levels and the varying paces of students—no one is left behind. Everyone finishes the bootcamp with new skills.
Which technical skills or concepts learned during the bootcamp are most useful to you today?
All of the technical skills I learned! The fundamentals of programming and object-oriented programming (OOP) form a solid foundation that allows me to evolve and deepen my knowledge in any framework.
The final project was especially valuable, as it taught me the ins and outs of team collaboration and understanding the various stages of a web project. These skills are essential for entering the professional world, where teamwork is crucial.
How did you approach your job search after training?
Before starting my job search, I took three months to strengthen the skills I gained during the bootcamp, learn about specific frameworks, and build my portfolio. This allowed me to showcase what I was capable of and, more importantly, demonstrate my potential for growth. After that, I applied for various roles I found on LinkedIn, such as Full Stack, Front-End, or Back-End positions.
What obstacles did you face during your transition to a more technical role, and how did you overcome them?
During my job search, I often encountered extremely detailed job descriptions listing a wide range of technical skills. This can be intimidating, especially early in your career when you don’t yet master every topic. However, I learned not to be discouraged—it’s important to take a chance and prepare yourself, rather than relying solely on luck!
Technical tests were also a source of anxiety. It’s crucial to prepare well, but also keep in mind that these assessments often serve to spark a discussion and evaluate our learning potential. I realized that being honest about my strengths and areas for improvement was just as important as my technical knowledge.
Can you explain how your new professional responsibilities align with the skills you gained during the bootcamp?
When I was a Full-Stack Developer Team Lead in the healthcare sector, I successfully delivered web projects with my squad. Thanks to the skills I gained during the bootcamp, my tasks included:
- Developing front-end solutions using Vue.js, back-end solutions with PHP, and components for infrastructure.
- Debugging and maintaining existing solutions to ensure their continued operation.
- Writing unit and integration tests (using Jest) to guarantee the stability of our technologies.
- Participating in code reviews and implementing necessary fixes based on feedback.
- Assisting and contributing to Scrum ceremonies as part of the agile development process.
What personal growth have you experienced during the bootcamp, and how has it influenced your professional life?
Before Le Wagon, I already had an interest in development, but it was through this intensive training that I truly discovered my passion for the field. Development is like solving a big puzzle, and I love the feeling of satisfaction when I find the solution.
As a Technical Product Manager, I now approach technical topics with more confidence and can actively propose ideas to move things forward. I can also ask questions with greater confidence to anticipate potential challenges when we’re in the design phase of a solution.
As a woman who has succeeded in building a career in tech, what specific challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
The main challenge I face is the lack of representation of women in the sector. This underrepresentation can subtly create barriers in my professional life. I’ve often noticed a clear imbalance during interviews and technical meetings: women were largely underrepresented.
While there has been positive progress with more women taking on technical roles, we are still far from achieving parity.
This challenge also presents an opportunity to contribute to positive change by becoming a role model and support for the next generation of women wanting to pursue a career in tech!
What advice would you give to others considering a career change?
I would say write down (or clearly keep in mind) all the reasons you want to change careers—this will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the process, even on the tougher days when self-doubt creeps in (we all have them!).
After that, go for it full force so you have no regrets!
Would you recommend Le Wagon to others? If so, what would you say about the program?
Absolutely! Anyone can find what they need based on their motivations and goals. The intensive format lets you fully immerse yourself in the world of coding and progress quickly. The courses are well-structured, and the instructors are attentive, which makes learning easier even for beginners.
Lastly, the environment is very collaborative and supportive. You learn as much from the courses as from interacting with fellow students.
And above all, Le Wagon doesn’t let you go after the training! They offer workshops, networking events, and personalized support to help with job placement.
What message would you give to women who are hesitant to pursue a career in tech?
If this is something you want, or even if you’re just curious, don’t hesitate! There are plenty of opportunities in this field to carve out your place and thrive. Tech is an exciting world that’s waiting for you! As a woman, you have everything you need to succeed in this field.
