Career transitions rarely start with a single clear plan. More often, they begin with curiosity, passion, and the realization that something is missing. For three alumni of Le Wagon Montréal’s Data Analytics bootcamp, those motivations came from very different paths, but led to the same decision: it was time to dive into data.

In this article:

Alumni from Le Wagon Montréal’s Data Analytics bootcamp share their backgrounds, motivations, learning experience, and the skills they developed through real-world projects. They followed different learning formats, including full-time online, full-time on campus in Montreal, and part-time hybrid options

Different backgrounds, shared interest in data analytics

Before joining the Data Analytics bootcamp, James, Jose and Maher had already built professional experience in a different field.

James began his studies in mechanical engineering before graduating with a degree in Business Administration. He then spent more than five years in operational roles across different industries, where he gained “firsthand exposure to how businesses collect and leverage their data to inform strategic decisions.”

Jose is an Industrial Engineer with experience in the shipping and retail industries, as well as roles in tree planting and beekeeping.

Maher worked for 25 years as a plant and operations manager in the food and packaging industry. He also holds a master’s degree in International Commerce from HEC Montréal and multiple professional certifications related to food regulations and lean manufacturing.

Despite these different professional paths, James, Jose, and Maher each described specific reasons for wanting to develop data analytics skills.

James explained that his interest evolved over time. “From a very young age, I have been fascinated by the collection and analysis of sports data,” he said. Later in his career, he realized that “my passion for math and analysis was missing from my professional life and decided it was time to make a career change.”

Jose pointed to curiosity and career considerations. “I wanted to move into a career that felt more stable, but also exciting to me,” he explained. “The idea of discovering stories hidden in data is what really drew me in.”

Maher linked his motivation to changes he observed in his industry. “I’ve seen the tremendous technology evolution inside the plants I worked,” he said, referring to “an expansion of the data collected and the KPI sophistications from lagging to leading KPI.”

For him, “the new era is all about predictive models and how to leverage all the data we’re able to collect nowadays.”

Why they chose Le Wagon Montreal

When explaining why they chose Le Wagon Montreal, the alumni referred to the program format, teaching approach, and reputation.

For James, the opportunity to train full-time was a deciding factor. “The main reason I chose Le Wagon was the opportunity to change my career in just two months,” he said, noting that many other programs he researched did not offer a full-time option.

Maher mentioned both personal preference as well as reviews and contacts in Europe and Brazil that convinced him to follow the program.

Whereas Jose emphasized the learning environment. “I chose Le Wagon because I liked having the option to learn on campus with in-person teachers,” he explained.

He was also “really convinced by the program and their hands-on approach.”

Learning by doing in a Data Analytics bootcamp

During the bootcamp, the alumni highlighted different moments and aspects of the experience.

For James, the people stood out most. “My best memories from bootcamp are the friendships I formed with my classmates and instructors,” he said. He described a “collaborative and supportive learning environment.” Maher also valued the teaching team, highlighting “the teachers and their contagious passion.”

Jose pointed to a key milestone. “Demo Day was definitely my favorite moment,” he said, explaining that it was when participants could showcase the results of their work.

All three also commented on the learning-by-doing approach that structured the program.

James noted that the datasets used throughout the course felt familiar. “I was surprised to see how similar the datasets we analyzed throughout the course looked to ones I had encountered earlier in my career,” he explained. He added that this approach “makes it easy to learn and envision using your skills in the next step of your career.

Jose described the immediate impact of practice and how it helped him identify areas that still needed reinforcement.

“Being able to practice right after learning made the concepts stick much better”

From data analytics skills to real-world projects

By the end of the bootcamp, the alumni described concrete skills they had developed.

James highlighted technical progress. “I was most surprised by the development of my SQL and Python skills,” he said. After completing the final project, he felt “extremely confident in the coding skills I learned during the bootcamp.”

Jose focused on a broader set of skills. “I think I developed my storytelling skills the most,” he explained, along with gaining a broader perspective on how to structure data and funnel it into something valuable.

Maher described changes in his approach to data work. “Identify and data cleaning and review the way I prepare a game plan to achieve the right data pipeline and in fine the dynamic dashboard I need.”

Projects were also mentioned as “incredibly rewarding” by James, explaining that it allowed participants to put their new skills into practice.

Guidance throughout the bootcamp

Throughout the bootcamp, feedback from instructors and teaching assistants played an important role.

James described the instructors as “knowledgeable, available, and friendly,” adding that he always felt they were fully invested in his learning.

Jose emphasized responsiveness, explaining that it helped him maintain momentum throughout the program.

“Having teachers who could quickly answer my questions was a game-changer” he said

Maher summarized his experience by saying, “They were passionate, always finding a workaround for every challenge I faced.”

Instructor perspective: skills beyond tools

From an instructor’s point of view, the value of the Data Analytics bootcamp lies in how technical learning is connected to business context.

According to Hossein, Lead Teacher in the Data Analytics bootcamp, the program “covers a wide range of tools and skill sets, making it valuable for companies at different stages of data maturity.” This breadth allows students to “adapt their knowledge to diverse business environments.”

Beyond technical skills, Hossein emphasizes how students learn to approach problems.

“Students strengthen their analytical thinking by tackling business-driven challenges,” particularly by learning “how to frame problems and communicate insights effectively.”

From his perspective, the biggest strength of the methodology is not access to tools, but how students learn to think. “The real value of the bootcamp lies in giving students the vocabulary and mindset of data analytics” helping them “know what to look for, how to ask the right questions, and how to choose the right approach when facing business problems.”
