From renewable energy to Data Science: Karim’s inspiring journey at Le Wagon

Curious about data science and its impact? Meet Karim, a passionate data scientist and teacher at Le Wagon. Discover how his journey from renewable energy to data science can inspire your own path in this dynamic field.

Hello Karim, can you introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Karim. I’m a renewable energy engineer from Egypt, now based in Berlin, Germany. I hold a Master’s degree in Solar Energy Engineering from Sweden and have a passion for climate justice and advocacy, with experience in UN Climate Change processes. My dedication to development work led me to conduct research with Engineers Without Borders at a girls’ boarding school in rural Tanzania, exploring sustainable electricity for women’s empowerment. My love for analysis, visualization, and mathematics drove me to complete Le Wagon’s Data Science bootcamp in January 2023.

What did you do after the bootcamp?

After the bootcamp, I started working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) and eventually became a teacher at Le Wagon. At the same time, I’ve been freelancing on data science projects, particularly those focused on climate change and energy access in rural areas. For example, I worked on a project in Ghana where I trained a machine learning model using hourly electricity consumption data from rural households. The model forecasts future energy needs, enabling service providers to design off-grid solar systems that are better suited to anticipated demand. This approach not only reduces future upgrade costs but also lowers CO2 emissions and financial expenses related to data collection in remote areas.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Le Wagon?

What I really love about teaching at Le Wagon is the constant learning experience. I meet new people from diverse cultures and backgrounds every day, which creates a vibrant and enriching environment for future data scientists!

What are your 3 tips for aspiring data scientists?

First, I would say practice, practice, practice. Data science is like learning a new language – the more you practice, the better you become. Second, don’t hesitate to learn from your peers. Ask questions, collaborate with other students, and seek advice from friends who are also in the field. And third, always Google your questions before relying on tools like ChatGPT.

Finally, share a fun fact about yourself that no one knows!

I’ve visited northern Norway, particularly Trondheim and the surrounding areas, four times – and none of those visits were during the summer!
