2025 has been rich with news, but you surely did not miss the biggest news of the year so far: we’ve just hit 1,000 Le Wagon Tokyo coding bootcamp graduates!
After celebrating in style on April 2nd, it’s now time to look at some stats and update our “who are Le Wagon Tokyo students” article dating back from pre-covid years.

What is the most represented nationality? Can someone be too old to start coding? Does our Data Science bootcamp attract more men than our Full-Stack Web Development one? And of course the most pressing question: how old is Sylvain, really?
Let’s dive in 👀
The most international Le Wagon destination
With 75 different nationalities represented over the past 8 years, Tokyo is arguably the most international Le Wagon destination across our 30+ campuses.
Can you actually recognize all these 75 flags? 😱

Each batch welcomes 5 to 15 different nationalities, with 40 to 50% of students flying into Tokyo specifically for our programs, while the other half is a mix of international folks and Japanese nationals living in Japan.
Our part-time bootcamps sometimes even welcome people fully online from other parts of Japan… or other parts of APAC, like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Seoul or Melbourne!
What are the most represented nationalities, you may ask? Considering that a lot of our graduates are binationals, sometimes even trinationals, it is not an exact science. But we know you want a ranking…
1) United States 🇺🇸 – 21%
2) Japan 🇯🇵 – 18%
3) United Kingdom 🇬🇧 – 7%
4) France 🇫🇷 – 7%
5) Australia 🇦🇺 – 4%
At the “bottom” of the list, there are also 31 countries from which we only welcomed a single student – and we can proudly say that 0.0002% of the Macao population went through Le Wagon Tokyo coding bootcamp! 😎
Are you thinking about flying to Tokyo from abroad for our coding bootcamps? We even have a travel guide for you!
Still working towards gender balance
Although we’ve seen significant improvement since 2017, during which a majority (78%) of our students were men, we’re not yet at full gender balance.

There are some very positive signs though:
– At 31%, and compared to data sourced from our friends at Japan Dev, the percentage of women joining our programs is double the percentage of women studying STEM topics in Japan.
– The more “scientific” bootcamp we offer, Data Science & AI, proportionally attracts as many women as our Full-Stack Web Development one
– We regularly run cohorts with 50/50 gender balance, and sometimes even with a majority of women
We keep pushing to reach a full gender balance, most notably through collaborations with Women in Science Japan, Women in Software Engineering Japan, and by encouraging more women to join our team as Lead Teachers or teaching assistants.
Introducing flexibility in how to study with us, specifically with part-time bootcamps, definitely helped: we’re reaching an impressive 60/40 split with these programs!
Tell me how old you are, and… I’ll tell you it doesn’t matter!

With tech education improving at all levels of the more traditional education system, it would seem pretty normal for our students to have gotten older on average. Guess what? Average age to join our bootcamps, or age distribution among our batches, have not changed at all.
Looking at student ages confirms once again that our part-time bootcamps are providing opportunities to a broader range of participants – Our part-time graduates are indeed a bit older, and especially when they are Data Science graduates. Who said AI, maths & Python were made for young folks?
Last but certainly not least, the record for the most senior student was recently broken, and now sits at 52 years old – And it was actually the third person over 50 that we were welcoming!
To 2,000 and beyond! 🚀
Reaching that milestone is a great time for the whole team to look back, and think: “what a ride…!”. If you ask our team members, they will all tell you that beyond the number, we’ve all been having a blast teaching and coaching each and every one of our students.
We’re immensely proud of what people have been achieving over the past 8 years. A bit thanks to us, but a lot thanks to themselves 🤗
