Le Wagon Canada partnered with rhum.hr, an international talent acquisition agency, to develop a white paper examining Canada’s job market, with a particular focus on tech and AI skills. This analysis highlights specific business needs, the most sought-after skills, and the challenges of a constantly evolving market in a context of AI-driven transformation.

Key figures and trends in Canada

Despite an economic slowdown, job vacancies continue to grow in Canada’s major provinces, and companies are still actively seeking qualified talent to fill their positions.

Companies are particularly struggling to recruit in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data protection. In fact, 43% of technology companies report a skills gap within their departments. This situation reflects a persistent mismatch between supply and demand for skills, hindering innovation and productivity.

The study emphasizes that the most in-demand technical skills in Canada include programming (particularly Python, JavaScript, and SQL for data analysis) as well as cloud systems management. At the same time, transferable skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, adaptability and resilience, and communication are also considered essential by recruitment specialists.

This study highlights the challenges and opportunities that Canadian companies face today. We hope it will serve as a foundation for more adapted training and talent attraction strategies.” – Pierre-Luc Labbée, founder & CEO at rhum.hr.

AI is not a threat but an opportunity

The white paper also reveals that artificial intelligence, while perceived as a threat by some, is proving to be an employment opportunity. The demand for AI-related skills continues to grow not only in the technology sector but across all industries nationwide. Positions requiring AI skills or the use of AI-powered tools have increased by 7.5% in one year. Productivity gains make it possible to expand opportunities or reinvest in learning projects.

The technology sector: a growth opportunity

Despite economic challenges, Canada’s technology sector continues to grow. Employment in tech occupations is expected to grow 1.77 times faster than the national average over the next decade, driven by increased digitization of businesses and growing demand for hybrid profiles.

A call for practical, lifelong learning solutions

In response to these challenges, the white paper emphasizes the need for hands-on training that enables candidates to acquire immediately applicable skills aligned with the real needs of the job market. Companies, for their part, are encouraged to strengthen their reskilling initiatives and adopt a more skills-based approach to talent acquisition.

It’s very clear that to remain competitive in the job market, you need to be curious and continuously train. This is what we provide at Le Wagon by offering very practical training, regularly updated to meet market needs.” – Marie-Gabrielle Ayoub, Co-founder and General Manager, Le Wagon Canada

The white paper provides concrete recommendations for both job seekers and companies to bridge the skills gap and maintain competitiveness in the Canadian market.
