Insights from Le Wagon’s Web Development teacher, Paul
From photographer to web developer, Paul shares how Le Wagon transformed his career and why he loves teaching to the next generation of tech talent.
At Le Wagon, we believe in the transformative power of learning tech skills. One of our inspiring stories comes from Paul Portier, a Ruby on Rails developer, teacher, and batch manager at Le Wagon. From switching careers to helping others build their futures, Paul’s journey reflects the essence of what Le Wagon is all about.
Paul didn’t start his career in tech—he began as a photographer but realized it wasn’t the right fit. Encouraged by friends, he joined Le Wagon as a student, a decision that he calls:
“One of the best experiences in my life.”
After graduating, Paul’s enthusiasm for Le Wagon didn’t stop. He became a teaching assistant, which he loved, and later transitioned to a full-time teacher. Paul is now committed to guiding students through their journeys in web development, sharing the same transformative experience that shaped his own career.
Learning web development is no easy feat. Paul acknowledges that the initial stages can be overwhelming:
“In the beginning, it’s hard because you are going to discover a lot of new concepts.”
But his advice is simple and powerful: trust the program.
“Maybe in the beginning, you don’t trust yourself, but trust the program. It will do the work.”
With persistence and Le Wagon’s proven methodology, concepts that once seemed complex begin to click, and students gain confidence in their abilities.
Paul brings empathy and passion to his teaching. He believes that understanding and patience are key:
“The key elements of my teaching are first to be really nice, to feel what the students feel, because sometimes it’s really hard.”
One of his favorite topics to teach is back-end development, where students experience the excitement of building real-world solutions:
“You build stuff, and it’s getting real at some point. It’s amazing.”
Paul doesn’t just teach; he equips students with tools to continue their learning journey. One tool he highly recommends is Cursor, an AI-powered code editor:
“It’s really powerful, but you need to have knowledge to use it.”
By integrating modern tools like this into their workflow, Le Wagon graduates stay ahead in their careers.
Paul’s favorite part of teaching is witnessing the growth of his students. He recalls a particularly touching story:
“I remember a student who was really shy at the beginning. At the end, he was a changed person, and he thanked every teacher because he thought it was a great experience.”
For Paul, moments like these highlight the deeper impact of Le Wagon—not just career transformations but personal growth as well.
