Breaking into the tech industry–especially for juniors eyeing roles in web development–can feel challenging. To help you gain insights and benefit from professional advice, we spoke with Manon, Senior Director of Talent & Culture at Potloc, a tech-led market research company. With her extensive experience in IT recruitment and deep understanding of HR dynamics, Manon offered valuable guidance for junior tech professionals.

Hard skills and soft skills

Manon emphasizes the importance of both hard and soft skills for landing junior positions. She points out that while technical skills are a prerequisite, companies increasingly value communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and adaptability. According to Manon, “A lot of things could be very helpful for junior positions: a strong learning desire, accountability, critical thinking skills, autonomy, and resilience”

Her company CTO introduced her to the concept of being a kind engineer emphasizing the importance of honesty, clear communication, and fostering a safe work environment. She says, “That’s what matters when you’re a developer, when you’re a good developer, that’s what actually makes the difference.”

Showcasing Transferable Skills

When it comes to career shifters entering the tech domain, Manon emphasizes the importance of owning one’s own story. She advises candidates to leverage their diverse backgrounds and transferable skills during interviews, noting, “Your past experiences shape your unique perspective and add depth to your candidacy.”

She also adds: “My personal opinion as a hiring manager is that as a career shifter, you have a different background. And it comes with superpowers in a way. You will most likely position yourself in a junior role at the beginning. But what you’ve done in the past, if you’re able to use it well during your career, will help you move internally faster after.”

Navigating the Application Process

Manon suggests using platforms like LinkedIn for job searches and recommends connecting with recruiters. She emphasizes the importance of personalized connections, saying, “Try to find the person that’s in charge of the hiring. Sometimes on LinkedIn, you can see who posted the position or who’s responsible for the recruitment. And then find something, create a connection with this person.”

Negotiating Salary Expectations

Manon advises researching salary benchmarks based on location, company size, and industry culture. She also emphasizes the importance of adopting a flexible approach during salary negotiations. Candidates should articulate a range based on their experience, leaving room for negotiation. She also adds: “ Compensation is not just salaries. Remember to ask also about vacation policy, about stock options distribution, and about flexibility for work from anywhere.”
