Summary
Martin Schreiber, Human Resources Manager at Luna Labs, shares his experience of hiring Andrew during Le Wagon Berlin's Career Day and how he is now settling in into his first job as a junior developer.

1. Can you tell us more about Luna Labs and what you do?

Luna was formed by a diverse group of friends brought together by a desire to increase the capacity of the internet to allow for meaningful connection.

This boils down to us not participating in the current attention economy of most social apps that compete for more usage and chain users to their devices. We want to provide true utility by enabling users to connect with interesting people around them and have a great time in person.

2. Can you tell more about the tech team at Luna Labs?

Our engineering team is currently 5 strong. We are using React Native in the Frontend and the Python framework Django in the Backend on AWS.

3. How did you hear about Le Wagon? Have you heard of coding bootcamps before?

I knew that coding bootcamps existed but had not looked into them in detail before. During my efforts to find great developers I was directed towards Le Wagon and was excited about the program and especially the great reviews from alumni.

4. What were your expectations when coming to the Career Day and meeting our students?

We went to an Open House Event before the Career Day to have a more casual chat with the graduates and get a feel for Le Wagon. So we went to the Career Day excited to go into more detail and do our first round of interviews with them. Interviewing 12 people in 2 hours is otherwise rather difficult to organise.

5. What were your thoughts upon the Career Day and after meeting them?

What was already visible during the Open House and even so on the Career Day was that the batch was really a group of people that have grown together over the 9 week program. Le Wagon’s focus on collaboration by having multiple group projects that actually develop an app from scratch really accentuates possible future roles for the alumni. This helped us a lot during our selection process. And to be honest, our Engineering Manager and I were pretty drained after this interview marathon. But it was great fun!

6. How did the hiring process of Andrew go?

Our Product Manager talked to Andrew during the Open House where we found out that Andrew and his team are doing an app with a similar premise as ours. We then had a proper preliminary interview on the Career Day. After that we invited him to our office for a technical interview with our Engineering and Product Manager which concluded in the decision to make him an offer.

After agreeing on the contract, I filed a visa application for Andrew since he is Australian. Since the 1st of February, Andrew has been an official member of the Luna Labs in Berlin.

7. Why did you decide to hire Andrew?

As mentioned above, we quickly felt a great vibe with Andrew. He shares many of our company's values and ideas, which was even demonstrated  by him coming up with a similar project idea as ours. Apart from the great cultural fit, Andrew has presented exceptional problem solving and communication skills while being a quick and adaptive learner.

8. How is Andrew settling in into the team?

Besides developing his mum’s poetry website for free, this is his first proper job as a developer. Andrew integrated into the team seamlessly and with ease. We can't remember a time before Andrew…

Learning to code properly is one thing but actually working in a product environment is something that we really value in a potential hire.

9. Would you consider hiring from Le Wagon again and why?

We will definitely continue working together with Le Wagon. Learning to code properly is one thing but actually working in a product environment is something that we really value in a potential hire.

10. How likely would you recommend hiring from Le Wagon and why?

Very likely. I can highly recommend going the Le Wagon route if your company is on the look to bolstering their ranks with Junior Developers.
