Q: Can you please introduce yourself?
A: My name is Charles, I am from Belgium and I’m 25 years old. I took part in the Data Analytics online Bootcamp and I am super excited to share some insights with you.
Q: What was your educational and professional background before joining the bootcamp? And how did it prepare you for it?
A: I have a very business-oriented educational background. I did a bachelor’s degree in International Business at Maastricht University and then, I pursued a Master’s degree in Digital Marketing Strategy at Trinity College Dublin. Both of those experiences were essential for the future steps of my career and also to get a first approach to the data world. It was my first real introduction to data being in everything we do.
After finishing my master’s degree, I decided to stay in Dublin to start working at Pinterest as an Account manager. My job there allowed me to work with data daily and analyze it to increase the performance of my clients. After two years doing that job, my professional experience allowed me to join the event company Fever in Madrid. There again I was working in a data analytical world that allowed me to elevate the experience of our partners through data analysis. Therefore, my educational and professional background already gave me a great first step into the data analytical world but not yet in manipulating it to its full strength.
Q: What made you join Le Wagon’s online Data Analytics bootcamp?
A: I’ve known about Le Wagon for a couple of years now, but unfortunately between studies and working, I thought I would never have the chance to do one of the programs they offered. So when I decided to take a career break at the end of last year, I knew I had to take this opportunity to embark on the Le Wagon journey. With my experience and what I would like to do in the future, I knew that the Data Analytics bootcamp was the one meant for me. Learning about ETL tools, SQL, and also Python are essential skills nowadays for a Data Analyst. The bootcamp offered the possibility to learn about all those skills in depth and to use them to their fullest extent.
Q: What challenges did you face during the bootcamp and how did you overcome them?
A: I actually was sick during the first two weeks and thus, was afraid to fall behind the program. When you look at the content covered daily, it is hard to miss too much material. Thankfully, the TAs were a great help, and also Marta, the Batch Manager. They knew about my situation and dedicated some extra time to help me cover the few topics that I had missed and that was a game changer for the experience. That’s the beauty about Le Wagon, the whole staff is super nice and always willing to help out, even online! You should never be afraid to reach out for help if you’re hesitating about something or need something to be explained to you again.
Q: How did the bootcamp help you with networking and job opportunities?
A: It helped me a lot! I can only recommend future alumni to make the most of the career services offered during the bootcamp. It helps you meet some interesting people who will share their backgrounds and how Le Wagon helped them to be where they are today. It will allow you to better showcase your newly acquired skills on your CV and LinkedIn. It also taught me how to reach out to other alumni to see if they could help with job opportunities. Having tried out this technique a couple of times now, I’ve only had a positive outcome from it! The alumni network is resourceful and helpful in helping you find your next career steps.
Q: How did the bootcamp meet your expectations?
A: My expectations were very much exceeded! I was expecting a lot out of the bootcamp through several friends who had done it before but it was even more fulfilling than I had hoped. I didn’t expect to learn so much in such a short amount of time. I was really surprised at how fast I assimilated Python and SQL which were a bit intimidating to me before the bootcamp. I couldn’t have hoped for anything as good as what it was!
Q: Can you share a personal insight or story highlighting your journey during the bootcamp?
A: I can’t think of an exact story per se but I can tell you what the highlight of the bootcamp was for me: the final project. Although it seemed very intimidating at the beginning of the bootcamp, it was probably one of the best parts of it. It allowed us to use all the skills we acquired in the first 7 weeks and use them to create a complete data report from scratch! It was very fulfilling because we had the chance to use all the tools we had learned until then. Additionally, we were able to collaborate with our teammates whom we started to know pretty well after sharing our experiences during the whole bootcamp. So, even though it was pretty scary initially, the project was probably my highlight of the bootcamp!
Q: What are your next steps or plans in the field of Data Analytics?
A: I’m currently trying to find a field that matches both the marketing and data world! It takes a bit of time to do so but the alumni network is helping me a lot in trying to achieve it! But, in the meantime, I’m currently helping out a friend doing some market research for a project he’s starting! At least, I can keep my SQL and Python skills up to date whilst helping him out!
Q: Would you recommend this bootcamp to others? If so, what would be a tip, you’d give to someone enrolling in a Le Wagon’s bootcamp?
A: If you are still hesitating about joining a bootcamp, don’t think any longer. It was truly an amazing experience not only skill-wise but also networking-wise. I can only recommend anybody interested in the data world to pursue a Le Wagon bootcamp.
My tip for you? Be sure to thoroughly do the prep work given to you before the bootcamp. Although you’ll review most of it during your time at Le Wagon, I can assure you that having a head start will only make your experience more enjoyable and allow you to focus on the important stuff right away!
