Hello Mariana, can you introduce yourself?

I’m Mariana, originally from Portugal. I completed Le Wagon’s Web Development bootcamp in Lisbon in 2018 and since then, I’ve been working as a freelance web developer while also teaching at Le Wagon.

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?

A fun fact about me is that a few years ago, I took a career break and became a scuba diving instructor in Southeast Asia, which was an absolutely amazing experience!

What did you do after the bootcamp?

After the bootcamp, I immediately started working as a freelancer. I was fortunate because a friend who was already freelancing as a web developer invited me to collaborate on some of her projects. Through word of mouth, I gradually built up my own projects. Initially, working solo was a bit terrifying, but it turned out to be both challenging and rewarding. Since then, I’ve been working as a freelance front-end developer. These days, I aim for longer assignments, ideally as a contractor, and I primarily use LinkedIn to find these opportunities.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Le Wagon?

My favorite thing about teaching at Le Wagon is the opportunity to pass on knowledge, which I find incredibly fulfilling. I love watching students grow and evolve throughout their learning journey. Additionally, teaching at Le Wagon helps me stay up-to-date with the latest tech trends since their curriculum is always current.

If you could code an app, no matter how silly, what would it be?

If I could code any app, no matter how silly, I think I would create an app to analyze baby cries and identify a baby’s needs during those first few months – whether they’re hungry, uncomfortable, or something else. As a new mom, I would have found that incredibly helpful!

Finally, what are your 3 tips for aspiring web developers?

First, build projects as you learn. It’s a great way to solidify your knowledge and create a portfolio at the same time. Second, seek mentorship early on; it’s incredibly helpful. Le Wagon is a fantastic place to find that support because the community of alumni and teachers is large, supportive, and always willing to help. Finally, remember that imposter syndrome is common. Trust your abilities, and know that everyone feels like a beginner at some point. If you join one of Le Wagon’s bootcamps, it can be an emotional roller coaster, but trust the process – you’ve got this!
