What is the HelloWork subsidy?

HelloWork subsidy, officially known as Specialized Practice Education and Training Benefits Program (専門実践教育訓練給付金), was created to support mid to long-term career professionals who want to upskill, reskill, or transition into new roles with stronger long-term prospects.

It is commonly referred in English to as the HelloWork subsidy because applications are handled through HelloWork. Eligible individuals enrolled in approved programs can receive partial reimbursement of their education and training costs, reducing the financial burden of learning in-demand skills.

Who is eligible for the HelloWork subsidy?

Eligibility is determined by HelloWork and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, alongside course-specific requirements from Le Wagon Tokyo.

From HelloWork side:

You may be eligible if:

  • You have been covered by employment insurance in Japan for at least 2 years
(3 years if you have received education and training benefits before), and
  • You lost eligibility no more than one year before the start of the program

Additional conditions may apply. Please confirm directly with your local HelloWork office.

IMPORTANT: You don’t have to be unemployed to benefit from the subsidy.

From Le Wagon Tokyo side:

Applicants must confirm the designated course number with Le Wagon Tokyo. This can be done during a call with our team – please book a call using this link.

Please note that Le Wagon Tokyo cannot determine HelloWork eligibility on your behalf. Always confirm details directly with HelloWork.

How much is the HelloWork subsidy?

In total, the Specialized Practice Education and Training Benefits Program reimburses tuition fees up to 640,000 yen per year.

After the course completion, you will be reimbursed 400,000 yen.
If you find a job with employment insurance support within one year after completing the course, an additional 160,000 yen will be provided.

Plus, you can get an extra 80,000 yen refund if the salary you get from their new position after the bootcamp is higher than the previous one by at least 5%.

This means that the total amount you will be able to claim back goes up to a total of… 640,000 yen.

This is over 70% of our AI Software (Web Development) bootcamp’s tuition fee.
It is 67% of our Data Science bootcamp’s tuition fee.

To make things easy to understand, we’ve consolidated in a table the subsidy you can receive for each case.

Course name Tuition fee Reimbursed after completion Reimbursed if you find a job within 1 year Reimbursed if new salary > old salary by at least 5%
AI Software (Web Development) (part-time or full-time) 890,000¥ 400,000¥ 560,000¥ 640,000¥
Data Science (part-time or full-time) 950,000¥ 400,000¥ 560,000¥ 640,000¥

Spotlight: Kae, now Application Engineer at NN Life

Although Kae had been interested in the bootcamp since 2024, she only became eligible for the subsidy and applied for our AI Software (Web Development) full-time bootcamp in 2025.

The application process itself was more structured than difficult. Before applying for the subsidy, Kae was required to attend a career consultation at HelloWork.

“I brought the Job Card, a detailed document outlining my skills, and work experience, and had a one-hour consultation, all in Japanese,” she explains. “We talked about my professional background, career goals, and why I wanted to apply for the subsidy.

After Kae graduated from the coding bootcamp and submitted her documents for reimbursement, the subsidy was paid out within a week. At this time, she was still employed at her previous company meaning she was able to receive an additional 160,000 yen as well. She received one more payment later when she got a new job and her salary increased by more than 5%.

Now, Kae is working as an Application Engineer at NN Life, putting her new skills into practice and continuing to grow in her tech career.
